TRIAGE

Providing the Acute Services Needed Before Treatment Occurs

With many mental health or substance abuse issues, acute services are needed before treatment can be provided. Through triage, detoxification, and crisis stabilization, the client stays for a short period of time (2-5 days) in order to first stabilize and then connect to various services. WestCare understands the importance of these programs and offers them in several different locations.

Crisis stabilization is needed when individuals are at risk of suicide, homicide, or a severe mental health crisis of some kind. Nurses, doctors, and psychiatrists work to assess the client and determine the proper medical course needed to start the stabilization process. They then monitor the individual and refer them to programs and services they will need once stabilized. Examples of programs such as these include: California's Crisis Psychiatric Response Services and Florida's Guidance/Care Center Medical/Psychiatric Program.

When addiction to drugs or alcohol is severe, detoxification may be needed to ensure client safety and avoid complications when usage ends. Particularly in regards to long-term users, quitting may lead to various medical crises. Detoxification units provide a safe method to sobriety with a team of medical professionals monitoring the process. Once complete, clients are then connected to other programs and services for treatment. An example of a program such as this includes: Florida's Guidance Care Center.

Triage centers focus on each client's individual needs and determine a proper course of medical action. From detoxification to crisis stabilization and more, triage provides short-term immediate care and professional assessment. Through collaboration with first responders, social service programs, and government agencies, triage centers provide a better option for individuals in crisis who do not belong in an emergency room. With registered nurses, psychiatrists, and a medical director, clients are given personalized attention for proper stabilization and then connected to further medical services. Examples of programs such as these include: Nevada's Las Vegas Community Triage Center and Reno Community Triage Center.
