Hal Rogers Appalachian Recovery Center Frequently Asked Questions

Where is WestCare Kentucky located?
The WestCare Kentucky Hal Rogers Appalachian Recover Center is located on KY-197/Elkhorn Creek at 10057 Elkhorn Creek in the Ashcamp area of Pike County approximately 30 miles south of Pikeville and 15 miles from Jenkins. Our office number is (606) 754-7077.

How is eligibility for treatment determined?
Anyone with a substance abuse issue who is interested in residential treatment should call the facility to complete a phone assessment to determine eligibility.

Is there a cost associated with WestCare Kentucky?
Yes, there is a cost to the program. The staff at WestCare Kentucky will advise you of the cost and the availability of financial assistance. If you are a resident of Kentucky’s Fifth Congressional District you may qualify for a voucher from Operation UNITE. You will need to contact their Treatment Referral Line at 1-866-90-UNITE (1-866-908-6483) to complete the required paperwork. Additionally, there is $350.00 non refundable resource fee required at admission.

How long is expected stay at WestCare Kentucky?
We are a minimum 90-day facility. However, our average stay is approximately 120 days.

Is WestCare Kentucky a faith based treatment program?
No, however we do have a chapel in the building and offer church services every Thursday evening and Sunday morning and begin each day with a devotional reading.

What is a normal day like at the facility?
We provide five scheduled groups daily with individual counseling sessions as needed or requested by the resident. We have scheduled chore time, recreation time and resident downtime. WestCare Kentucky provides meals and snacks that have been approved by a dietitian. Everyone is up by 7am and in the bed by 11pm.

Can family send and residents receive mail at your facility?
Yes, you can send and receive mail from day one. The outgoing and incoming mail will be logged. Incoming mail must be opened in front of a staff member.

In money allowed at the facility?
WestCare Kentucky allows you to have $14.00 a week. This money will permit you to purchase sodas from our Pepsi machines. Sodas are the only item allowed to be purchased at our facility.

Do residents receive off-campus passes?
Clinical staff may approve off-campus passes. A client may petition to receive an off-campus pass the week of his graduation.

Do residents need to supply linens?
No. All bed linens, towels and washcloths will be provided by WestCare. However, we do ask that the residents bring their own pillows.

Do residents need to bring laundry detergent?
No. WestCare provides all laundry detergent.

What is your telephone policy?
The resident must submit a telephone list to his counselor and the list must be approved before a phone call can be made. We offer an outgoing phone call to a family member upon arrival. Upon entry into Phase 2 (approx. 4 weeks) our residents will have two outgoing phone calls per week.

What is your visitation policy?
A resident will be eligible for family visitation after he completes our orientation phase (approx. 21 days). The resident must submit a visitation list to his counselor and the list must be approved before visits are allowed. Each resident is allowed a maximum of five (5) visitors a visit. Visitation takes place on Sundays from 3pm to 5pm EST.

Do you provide any type of physical activities for the residents?
Yes, WestCare Kentucky has a full size gym inside, full size basketball court outside, softball field, walking track, weight room along with several other recreational activities.

Is tobacco allowed at the facility?
No. Our facility and its premises are tobacco free. Clients are offered a Tobacco Cessation Class provided by the Pike County Health Department and are encouraged to bring patches with them.

Am I required and/or allowed to be employed while a resident at the facility?
No, WestCare Kentucky does not require or allow our residents to be employed while they are a resident of the facility. Our focus is on treatment of the individual and his recovery, allowing no time for employment.

Does your facility offer transportation to and from the airport?
Yes, we can make accommodations for clients’ transportation to and from Tri-Cities Airport located in Johnson City, Tennessee and the Bluegrass Airport located in Lexington, Kentucky. The fee for this service is $300.00 roundtrip and is non refundable.

What personal items do I need to bring with me?
One weeks worth of clothing including underwear and socks, 2 pair of shoes (1 inside & 1 outside), sleepwear (sweats, ball shorts, lounge pants), and shower shoes.
Clients should also bring a watch, paper, black pens, stamps, personal hygiene items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, soap deodorant, brush, and a small bucket or shower tote. Clients may also want to bring one “nice” outfit (Khakis and a button up shirt) for weekly graduation night.

Should I bring any money with me?
Clients are allowed $14 per week and if possible should bring $1 bills. Also, a non-refundable (one time only fee) $350 resource fee is due at time of admission. Payment arrangements can be made.

Are we allowed and/or required to do community service?
Yes, community service opportunities are allowed and often required. Many residents of WestCare Kentucky have community service obligations. WestCare Kentucky believes that in recovery, helping them to fulfill those obligations is not only therapeutic, but also fosters confidence and self-esteem.
