WestCare Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Shelter

Over $8700 was raised at a charity golf scramble for the benefit of the WestCare Emergency Shelter of Pikeville on Friday, October 12. Twenty corporate teams competed in the event, which was held at Stone Crest Golf Course in Prestonsburg. The money raised by the event will be used by WestCare to complete a remodeling project of the facility’s kitchen area. "The kitchen here at the shelter is just like any home. It’s the heart of the shelter," says Community Service Director, Sharon Yates of WestCare. "People gather here right now and it’s drab and depressing. The money raised from this tournament will make it happy and cheerful."

WestCare is a non-profit charitable organization, and in 2006, they assumed control of the Pikeville Homeless Shelter on Bypass Road. The golf scramble was hosted by The East Kentucky Miners in partnership with Wal- Mart and SouthEast Telephone. On-hand as a special guest golfer for the Miners was team co-owner and former Miami Dolphins quarterback, Jay Feidler.

"Everyone had a great time at the event and it was a pleasure to be involved," said Miners Senior Marketing Manager, Brian Levy. "We can’t wait to do it again next year." Taking home the fi rst place plaque for golfing was Team Wal-Mart of Paintsville, while Team Appalachian Wireless and Team Wal-Mart of Hazard came in a close second and third. Grilled hot dogs and other refreshments were provided to golfers free of charge by SouthEast Telephone, Pepsi, and Wal- Mart. "It is important to be involved in the communities you serve," says SouthEast Telephone Marketing Director, Bambi Phillips. "We believe in the mission and vision that WestCare has for the people of Eastern Kentucky, and we are very excited that this fundraiser turned out to be such a great success for them."

Hoping to make the tournament an annual event, a second WestCare golf scramble is already in the early planning stages for sometime next year.
